Story about: Dominique Portet, Vigneron, Yarra Valley

What can be described as a wine philosophy lesson like no other, Dominique Portet's beginnings were at Chateau Lafite, Bordeaux.  This mischievous boy never dreamed of becoming a proud 'Frozzie'.

While peddling his bike through the vineyards of Medoc, his father Andre would shoo his young son out of the chateau cellars, usually to play hide and seek, encouraging an adventurous life beyond those gravely banks.

Making his way to California's Napa Valley (graduating Dux Oenology, Montpellier University), he crafted wines with his brother Bernard. However, much like the environment he was soon to encounter, Dominique hopped a little further searching for vineyards to rival his native France.

The soil, sun, landscape, people, freedom, culture - in this land he found his dream! The young Frenchman was hooked on his new discovery, and decades of pioneering fine wine has followed. Australia became home, now in his blood and that of his sons. Today with 10th generation winemaker Ben Portet guiding the family craft in the winery, this story of the finest in tradition and innovation is far from finished....

The Portet family has been making wine for 10 generations, since the early 17th century. Now affable Frenchman Dominique Portet, a household name in Victorian wine circles, and son Ben, are continuing the tradition at this charming winery in the heart of the Yarra Valley.

The cellar door has a French country feel, and the terrace café serves light foods from the winemaker’s table (perfect with a cool glass of the estate’s Fontaine Rosé). Wine quality is exemplary across the board, and the serene surrounding landscape is the Yarra Valley at its best.
