Pindarie Wines, Barossa, South Australia
The Pindarie Story Pindarie an aboriginal word meaning ‘hilly place’ is located on the Western Ridge of the Barossa, South Australia. Pindarie wines are family owned and operated. Tony, a 6th generation grazier and Wendy, a Viticulturist with 12 years’ experience at Penfolds, identified the Western Ridge as a perfect sub region, for crafting both traditional full bodied Barossa red wines as well as innovative Mediterranean styles. Pindarie’s cellar door, wines and property echoes its owners Tony and Wendy’s passion for preservation and sustainability.
The cellar door and adjacent stables have been meticulously renovated by Tony to highlight their original existence of the 1850’s where they were formally used for housing animals, feed and farm equipment. Pindarie’s cellar door is set above the contoured farm just metres away from the 1890’s Victorian style homestead, which is now occupied by Tony and Wendy and their three children.
The Pindarie property stretches across 700 acres of rolling foot hills. The property and cellar door are becoming not just a place but a lifestyle destination Anthony Madigan (Wine Business Magazine) described Pindarie as “Barossa’s hottest new tourist spot….. Pindarie is a real story about real people”. Pindarie first started producing wine under the Pindarie label in 2005 with the release of its Shiraz.
From 2005 Pindarie has continued to develop and grow, adding more distinctive Barossa wines to its range. Since its foundation, Pindarie has released its Black Hinge reserve label consisting of a Tempranillo and Shiraz. As well as crafting the “Bar Rossa” blend, a unique Mediterranean blend consisting of Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Shiraz. This blend now in its sixth vintage, has received strong support in its short history. A new addition to the portfolio is the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon which stands now stands alongside the Pindarie Shiraz. And not forgetting the reds counter partner the whites Pindarie have a Savagnin known as La Femme as well as a Riesling. The combination of climatic suitability and soil type of rich red brown earth, limestone rock and red clay known as Terra Rossa soil, provides an ideal foundation in developing fruit that is able to develop full flavours. This combined with the knowledge and innovative flair of Peter Leske, our winemaker, embodies Pindarie to develop distinctive quality Barossa wines.
Pindaries vineyard and farm exercises a strong passion and commitment to sustainability, this can be seen in both farm and vineyard management. The planting of native trees for wind breaks for the vines as well as re-establishing native reserves across the property are just some of the ideas and projects implemented to further the properties quest to build Pindarie into sustainable enterprise.
